VMWare Server sucks!
Posted on July 8th, 2010 No commentsAt the office we use VMWare Server on a couple of different systems to run “appliance” based applications, the problem is every few months the Web interface suddenly screws up and all we get is 503 errors when attempting to login. I’ve searched high and low for the cause and solution to fix it, as far I can tell its occurs because the server randomly deletes or corrupts some important Tomcat related content. Then the only solution I’ve found to fixing this is completely uninstall VMWare Server, remove all the licenses, reboot the system and then re-install VMWare server.

Recipe: Confit de Canard
Posted on June 17th, 2010 No commentsImage sourced from: roboppy on flickr under CC-by-nc-nd 2.0 license. A good confit de canard (duck confit) is hard to get hold of in England, but luckily as my parents live in the Dordogne region they sometimes bring over a tin. A confit de canard is duck legs that are kept in tins, covered in it’s own fat.

Freyja Growing Up
Posted on June 12th, 2010 No commentsIt’s been a little while since I talked about our little one, and my she has grown up a lot. She’s 14 months old now and she’s walking around like no tomorrow. She wants to walk so much that if you let her loose outside she will just walk and walk, and if you try picking her up she will protest

The Demoiselles Project
Posted on May 1st, 2010 No commentsIt’s been over 10 years since I made this painting, and aside from a very short period spent hanging on the art room wall, it’s never really seen the light of day. It’s been resting – along with various other pieces of art from my A-level days – in a pile, under my bed. Well enough time has passed, and the Demoiselles project that I started all those years ago is being resurrected, but this time, it’s about brightening it up.

How to visualise your webserver logs as a map of user progression through your site content
Posted on March 8th, 2010 No commentsI love web stats and for a long time now (last 4 years or so) I have been analysing web stats with Google Analytics, which is probably one of the best apps for assessing basic stats (provided the web browser being used support javascript). For the most accurate stats I also use AWStats (which has provided great results for the last 7 years) Within the last year or two I have also employed the use of ClickTale for the analysis of user interaction

Strangers in the same boat – Christmas 2009
Posted on December 23rd, 2009 No commentsThis used to be the ‘hello world’ post. It’s taken from July to now – that’s 5 months – to pick a theme for my blog and then get around to editing it. I’m quite inclined to say that that’s pretty rubbish, but I won’t, because that’s the usual response I have to these kind of things.

Servers Painlessly Migrated to London with Linode
Posted on December 8th, 2009 No commentsLast night I read Linode ’s announcement that they have opened a new data centre in London, and jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been using Linode since January this year, and their VPS hosting has been absolutely trouble-free. Not only that, they have probably the best administration interface I have ever seen.

Windows 7 doesn’t seem to like zip files
Posted on August 30th, 2009 No commentsOn every other version of windows I've used over the last 12 years or so, you've always been able to double click a .zip archive, open it up like a folder and drag and drop any files you like out of it to anywhere else on your hard drive.

User Agent
Posted on August 30th, 2009 No commentsOf all the websites out there that I visit on a daily basis, I wonder which actively analyse my user agent and do something with it, or at least end up exposing it somewhere else on the web.
