Open Source Firewall
Posted on July 20th, 2010 No commentsAt work we use commercial Firewall appliances, where the vendors charge a fortune for the updates and support, its poor value for money, so I’m going to be looking into the Open Source alternatives, here’s the ones I’ve identified so far, hopefully I’ll get chance to review them and post my findings - http://www.smoothwall.org/ http://www.ebox-platform.com/ http://www.vyatta.com/ http://www.endian.com/en/community/ http://www.untangle.com/ http://www.astaro.com/ http://www.idecogateway.com/ http://www.zeroshell.net/ http://www.collax.com/produkte/detail/produkt/Schutz-vor-Angriffen http://www.clearfoundation.com/

Alternative to array_merge merging many arrays
Posted on July 8th, 2010 No commentsI have a case at work where I needed to go through a big list of arrays, and add them to a new master array. It turns out this is incredibly slow when adding many large arrays to a larger array. The alternative to this if you don’t care about keys or duplication of values is to just add it into the array

Adding Extra Security – Encrypting Passwords For Multiple Users
Posted on June 26th, 2010 No commentsAs many of you probably know, I’ve been working for quite some time on a project called Private Passwords . It is an online password management tool which stores your passwords for any site and allows you to retrieve them from anywhere in the world. One of the things that has niggled me for a while was the fact that the encrypted passwords were all encrypted using an AES encryption key , but had no real barrier if someone somehow managed to get hold of the AES key

Recipe: Scallop Salad
Posted on June 23rd, 2010 No commentsI got this recipe off the UKTV website (and modified it slightly) and it is absolutely delicious on it’s own as a starter, or as a side to a nice lemon-marinated salmon fillet.

Windows 7 Partition Manager
Posted on May 30th, 2010 No commentsI’ve just found a handy free tool for managing partitions really easily in Windows 7. http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html I’d used the built in partition manager in the Windows 7 Disk Management tools to shrink my primary volume and make the second drive, but then I realised I’d made it too big and needed a couple of extra gig added back onto my C drive

The Demoiselles Project
Posted on May 1st, 2010 No commentsIt’s been over 10 years since I made this painting, and aside from a very short period spent hanging on the art room wall, it’s never really seen the light of day. It’s been resting – along with various other pieces of art from my A-level days – in a pile, under my bed. Well enough time has passed, and the Demoiselles project that I started all those years ago is being resurrected, but this time, it’s about brightening it up.

I’m currently working on a High Availability LAMP setup, which I’ll post details and results for a little later, there should be some interesting trinkets in there for people looking for File replication, Database replication etc on a Linux based servers.

New House & Growing Freyja
Posted on January 31st, 2010 No commentsI haven’t done a “personal” update for some time now, so I thought I’d briefly brush over our recent lives. The photo you can see on the left is the current state of our new house that is being built in the new Dickens Quarter development in Portsmouth

iPad. It’s not for you!
Posted on January 26th, 2010 No commentsAfter a long day of designing, I finally put away my Macbook Pro and picked up my iPhone to browse through the day’s ‘tweets’. I ask myself one question: Why is everyone slating the iPad

Semantic Markup – What should h1 Be?
Posted on December 11th, 2009 No commentsI had an interesting argument earlier today. One of our websites is being redesigned at the moment, and the page layout has the logo and company name at the top, and below the menu is a subtitle
