A Simple News System For Basic Websites
Posted on March 10th, 2010 No commentsThis is a very simple news system with comment support which is ideal for adding simple blog/news system functionality to any website needing that kind of system. In the past I'd usually use wordpress as a pre-built solution for adding this kind of content to a site and although you get a lot of extra benefits by using wordpress (as a result of its plugin system) there can be a lot of issues with tweaking the wordpress theme to suite the site. The method of embedding this system is so simple that it can be used easily within any site template and as such it's perfect for quickly adding blogging or news system style functionality to previously static sites or E-Commerce systems where an attempt at tying in wordpress could be very messy in reference to: About The Demo » Phpns » Open Source PHP News System ( view on Google Sidewiki )

Microsoft Browser Choice Update
Posted on February 24th, 2010 No commentsSo the “Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update For EEA Users” has arrived in my list of potential updates. Interestingly though, Microsoft have not selected this update by default. That might put a dampener on Opera’s big day…

Very Exciting – HipHop by Facebook
Posted on February 2nd, 2010 No commentsWell this evening Facebook have revealed what PHP developers globally have been speculating about and revealed their big secret . And boy, this could really change the landscape of PHP as we know it. I’m a great fan of compiling PHP for one reason or another, but I’ve never seen it reliably work.

New House & Growing Freyja
Posted on January 31st, 2010 No commentsI haven’t done a “personal” update for some time now, so I thought I’d briefly brush over our recent lives. The photo you can see on the left is the current state of our new house that is being built in the new Dickens Quarter development in Portsmouth

Handling CType Data With SimpleXML in PHP
Posted on January 15th, 2010 No commentsIf you're new to SimpleXML then the output and representation of complex XML data produced by the library can be daunting and sometimes confusing, but once you're used to it, SimpleXML is a massively useful tool for processing XML information. When debugging other people's implementations of simpleXML however, one of the biggest issues I come across time and again is the apparent loss of CType data from the processed feed. Luckily this is very easily remedied, but not well documented so here's how to deal with it.

Buy a Lexus – Blind Your Fellow Road Users
Posted on January 14th, 2010 No commentsEveryone who knows me will know that I am marginally prejudiced against people with expensive cars (BMW, Mercedes, Lexus etc.), but not entirely without cause. One of my niggles (pet hates if you will) about them is their unnecessarily dazzling headlights.

Styling the The TinyMCE Text Area
Posted on January 4th, 2010 No commentsThey guys who produce TinyMCE suggest, when initialising the editor, that you set the content_css parameter to be the url to your site’s CSS, so that the content you type into the text area is styled in the same way as the rest of your site.

Servers Painlessly Migrated to London with Linode
Posted on December 8th, 2009 No commentsLast night I read Linode ’s announcement that they have opened a new data centre in London, and jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been using Linode since January this year, and their VPS hosting has been absolutely trouble-free. Not only that, they have probably the best administration interface I have ever seen.

Agggh Quota Exceeded
Posted on December 1st, 2009 No commentsApparently though I've only used 3,341.70 MB of my 20,000.00 MB webspace I have hit my file quota limit of 262,144 files. And what notification did I get - none! Just a load of head scratching as to why my FTP uplaods were failing... Looks like I'm gonna have to delete some stuff..
