cURL Tips – HTTPS requests
Posted on December 15th, 2009 No commentsToo many times have I seen this in cURL clients: curl_setopt ( $ch , CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST , false ) ; curl_setopt ( $ch , CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER , false ) ; Why is this bad? You leave yourself totally open to man-in-the-middle attacks, and makes SSL virtually pointless. Sure the data passed between the two servers would still be encrypted, but there is no way of verifying the server you’re talking to is the server you WANT to be talking to! My recommendation is that you verify the server is genuine by checking against the genuine CA certificate in PEM format.

Importance of User Agents
Posted on December 9th, 2009 No commentsWhen you write something that connects to a web server, what user agent do you use? Far too often have I seen things like: curl_setopt ( $c , CURLOPT_USERAGENT , "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)" ) ; In my opinion you should always use a nice descriptive user agent that explains to the server exactly what your client may be trying to achieve, or at least a unique identifier

The Importance of Configuring Stuff Properly
Posted on October 9th, 2009 No commentsToday I had a TOS Violation on my Linode VPS for sending spam e-mails. Odd I thought as I only have 1 mail user.

My Gumtree Ads
Posted on August 19th, 2009 No commentsMy gumtree ads ( mygumtreeads.com ) is a new project of mine, filling in what I see as one of the major gaps in Gumtree's current service. The gap that I and I'm sure many other people have experienced is the inability to setup a user page containing all of your ads for easy reference, a bit like an eBay store.

Talk Like Apache Day
Posted on May 11th, 2009 No commentsI’m sure you’ve all heard of Talk Like A Pirate Day , and here’s my rather geeky idea for another day. It’s Talk Like Apache Day! Basically, you talk like an HTTP server (not specifically Apache, but “Apache” was similar to “A pirate”…)

Retirement Planning
Posted on March 11th, 2009 No commentsPlanning for your retirement and old age can be a very worth while exercise, yet most people leave the task until way too late in life. Retirement may seem a long way off now, but what will you do if you reach retirement age and find you have no means to support yourself or your loved ones over the 20 or 30 years that follow leaving your job?

You Can’t Compile a PHP FastCGI on Ubuntu!
Posted on November 21st, 2008 No commentsLast night I was having some issues compiling a real-life FastCGI I could actually use, but I came across a big show-stopper: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgssapi_krb5 After a little research and talking on the #roadsend IRC channel with GRiD (see chat log ), I discovered that you just can’t compile a statically linked binary on Ubuntu. The statically linked library was dropped between Feisty and Gusty, and this may also be the case across many other Debian-based distributions
